Bob Wootton and Six Mile Grove - Biography

Bob Wootton, “the man behind the man in black,” played lead guitar for Johhny Cash from 1968-1998. His first album recorded and released with Cash in 1969 was “live at San Quentin”. Listen closely and you’ll hear one of the inmates yell “Where’s Luther, Johnny?” Cash explains that Luther Perkins had passed away a few months before, and that a new guitar player had joined the group. That man was Bob Wootton.

Wootton was part of the original “Tennessee Three.” During his 30 years with Johnny Cash, he played famous concerts at Madison Square Garden and The Houston Astrodome. The tour included other country legends: Carl Perkins, The Statlers, and the Carter family. Wootton appeared with Cash at prisons and the White House, he played on Austin City Limits, and before the Queen of England. He played through the group’s last public tour in 1998. Few people know Johnny Cash and his music as closely as Wootton does.

After swearing to never play music again, Wootton had a change of heart in January 2004. He agreed to play a weekend long Johnny Cash tribute in Minneapolis, MN. Needless to say both shows sold out. Wootton has been making regular appearances ever since with his Minneapolis-based band Six Mile Grove, who also serve as his opening act.  Six Mile Grove has been a name to know on the Midwest music scene for the past 10 years, and their energetic style compliments Wootton’s laid back stage presence. Their brand of ballads and story-driven songs pays tribute to the simplicity and genius of Johnny Cash.  Jack Sparks, of the Minneapolis City Pages comments: “[Wootton] own[s] the stage like a pro… authenticity rocks.”
